Submissions should be emailed to submissions@rendingtheveil.com. Please follow these guidelines. You can also use this address for any questions you may have.
- All copyrights for submissions published in RTV remain in the possession of the author of the work – that's you. Collaborations are expected to share copyrights as agreed upon by the collaborators. Art donated and used for purposes of site identification and/or logo will be copyright Rending the Veil with full use privileges retained by the artist.
- Article submissions should be between 1000 and 5000 words in length and in Word document (.doc) form.
- Make sure your topic has a sufficient introduction to bring the reader up to par with your agenda, and provide links (if needed) to material to aid that introduction or to demonstrate your points. Consider the level of expertise involved in understanding your article. In some cases, you would do better with a series including an introductory topic, then presenting more advanced viewpoints.
- Satire is welcome, as long as its not blatantly libelous.
- If graphics are required to illustrate your article, include them with your submission, as separate files or embedded in your document. Make sure all graphics are crisp, clear, and of sufficient size (minimum of 300 pixels square, 500 preferred). Submissions for the Art Column or Galleries must be considerably larger.
- MS Word has a spellcheck and check grammar function. Use them. We really shouldn’t need to correct things you can do before submitting your work. Check for passive voice in particlar.
- Capitalize the names of religions and magical systems. Spelling of the word “magic/k” could be either with or without a final k, but please refrain from using “magickian” or a k in any word with a soft c sound. Also, refrain from spellings like “majick” and the like.
- Editing for spelling, grammar, formatting, and other mechanics will be done for every submission. Minor edits will not always involve consulting the author, though we will consult the author for content issues and major edits. Don't take it as a personal affront when you receive your edits for review.
- In-text citations, endnotes, and bibliographies are a must for any references you use. APA style is fine; you may also footnote your citations.
- Do not plagiarize, and do not make statements of fact out of claims that are scientifically unprovable at this time. Theorizing is one thing, particulary with well-documented research to back it up. But refrain from preaching your paradigm as universal, irrefutable “truth,” no matter how much you believe it.
- We will reject all submissions which blatantly defame groups or individuals. Take your order wars elsewhere. Critique is welcome. Libel, not so much.
- Do not reveal your oathbound material on Rending the Veil. This refers only to material which you, as the author, are bound by oath to keep silent. Any information you have concerning a system about which you are not bound by oath may be incorporated into your submission. [Disclaimer: We take no responsibility for oathbound material that finds its way on our site. If it was written and submitted by an individual who is actually bound by the appropriate oaths, we will gladly take down the submission. If it was revealed by a person who is not technically under oath, however, it is technically their right to make use of the information at their disposal as they see fit (barring plagiarism or copyright violation)].
- Please keep in mind that readers may leave comments and initiate discussion threads on individual articles. We will do our best to ensure and maintain a level of civility and professional courtesy within these threads, but we do not have the time to review each and every comment on each and every article. If you feel as if you are being harassed or mistreated in the comments, please alert us immediately, but first review the comments in question yourself and make sure you aren’t just being thin-skinned. We’re not here to babysit you if you get in over your head.
- We reserve the right to modify these tentative guidelines as the need arises. Review this page for changes periodically, as we may not always remember to make announcements.
Editing & proofreading, emphasized
- Check for consistent pronoun usage. Do not shift from “one” to “he” to “they” to “you.”
- Check that your sentence structure does not create misunderstanding through inappropriate subject placement. Example from a recent edit:
I can think of only one other freely available method of self-exploration, but that pathway demands its own price, the BDSM community. I don’t think the price is the BDSM community. Sentence should read: I can think of only one other freely available method of self-exploration: the BDSM community, but that pathway demands its own price.
- Keep faddish cultural references to a pertinent minimum. Avoid jargon or slang if it can be avoided as this obfuscates your message. We don’t mean to sanitize your article, as these things are a matter of personal expression and style. Just be sure your language is clear and that any arbitrary terms are defined sufficiently to clarify your point of view.
