Ritual: LBRP – Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram

This rite is best performed daily to gain maximum benefits, most of which must be experienced to be quantified. Use this ritual to banish elemental energies and unwanted influences, before and after a larger magical working, and to balance your personal sphere (as well as your moods). Use your athame or other dagger, or the index finger of your dominant hand. Some sources cite that the wand may be used instead.

Some people complain that this and other rituals are too Christian in flavor. The point is not to identify with the imagery or the connotations of the names of God. They are merely tools, and it is unwise to take them too personally.

The Qabalistic Cross

Stand facing east. Visualize yourself growing taller until the Earth becomes a tiny sphere at your feet and your head is far into space. See the solar system swirling around you. From high above your head, visualize a point of immaculate white light coming toward you until it becomes a globe just above your head. Point to this sphere with the index or dagger and draw it down to the forehead (third eye area). Vibrate, sing, or say, “Ateh.” (Sounds like: AH-TAH  Meaning: Unto Thee)

Using your dagger, draw the light down, pointing first to your heart, then descending to the groin area. Hold the dagger pointing downward, covering the groin. Feel this shaft of pure light go down through the body into the earth below you. Vibrate “Malkuth.” (Sounds like: MAL-KOOT  Meaning: The Kingdom)

Draw the point of the dagger back up the body and then over to the right shoulder. Touch the right shoulder with the blade pointing to the right, and visualize the beam of light shining to the farthest reaches of the Universe. Vibrate “Ve-Geburah.” (Sounds like: VE-GEB-OOR-AH  Meaning: and the Power)

Cross over to the left shoulder and repeat, with the blade pointing to the left. Vibrate “Ve-Gedulah.” (Sounds like: VE-GED-OOL-AH  Meaning: and the Glory)

Clasp the hands to the chest, as if praying. (If using the dagger, the tip of the blade should be pointing up). Visualize within the chest a brilliant golden glow. Vibrate “le-Olahm, Amen.” (Sounds like: LEH-OH-LAHM AH-MEN  Meaning: to the ages, amen)

You stand now in the center of a cross of light that reaches to the ends of the Universe.

The Formulation of the Pentagrams

Go to the eastern boundary of the circle. (If there’s not a great amount of space available, just turn in place rather than circumnavigating the area). Trace an Earth banishing pentagram in the air before you, as pictured below. Draw it as perfectly as possible. Visualize it glowing in flaming electric blue light.

Earth banishing pentagram

Take a deep breath through your nose. Make the Sign of the Enterer: Bring your hands up to the sides of your head, fingers up and palms forward. Step forward with your left foot and thrust your hands forward to penetrate the exact center of the pentagram. As you do this to charge the pentagram, use your entire exhalation to vibrate the God name “YHVH” (Sounds like: YOD-HEH-VAHV-HEH  Meaning: The unknowable name of God) Picture the energy you inhaled shooting out your hands, through the pentagram and into infinity. Step back into place and bring your right index finger to your lips as if you’re saying, “Shhh.” This is the Sign of Silence.

Note: You may visualize the pentagrams moving away from you to the edges of the area you wish to clear and protect, whether that be the room, the borders of your property, etc. Just don’t get too ambitious.

Keeping the arm extended, walk to the south of the circle, (or pivot). Visualize the tip of the finger or dagger drawing a white line in the air, connecting the eastern pentagram to the southern. Trace another banishing pentagram, and make the Sign of the Enterer while vibrating “ADNI” (Sounds like: AH-DOH-NYE  Meaning: Lord) Step back into place and make the Sign of Silence.

Continue to the west, drawing your connecting white line. Trace a banishing pentagram and vibrate “AHIH” Sounds like: EH-HEH-YEH  Meaning: I Am)

Continue to the north, and trace a banishing pentagram, but vibrate “AGLA.” (Abbreviated from “Ateh gibor le-Olam Adonai” Sounds like: AH-GLAH  Meaning: Thine is the strength forever, O Lord)

Return to the east, still drawing the white line, thereby completing your circle. There should be now four flaming blue pentagrams sealed with names of God, blazing at the four quarters of the circle. Return to the center of the circle and stand facing east.

The Invocation of the Archangels

Note: Whether or not the angels are invoked or evoked is a matter of perspective. Either you are inviting the angels into your sphere to rebalance it, or you are calling aspects out from within yourself to serve the same purpose.

Extend your arms straight to the sides, so that your body forms a cross. Visualize yourself at the center of the Universe. Visualize before you a figure on a hill, dressed in yellow robes with purple highlights. (These are the flashing colors.) The figure carries a caduceus wand and its robes wave in the wind. Feel the breeze. Vibrate, “Before me, Rafael.”

Visualize a figure behind you, in the west, dressed in blue robes with orange highlights. The figure holds a cup and is surrounded by waterfalls or ocean waves. Feel the moisture in the air. Vibrate, “Behind me, Gabriel.”

To your right, visualize a figure dressed in red with green highlights. The figure holds in his hands a flaming sword. Feel the heat. Vibrate, “On my right side, Michael.”

To your left, visualize a figure standing on a fertile landscape, dressed in a combination of citrine, olive, russet and black. The figure holds some sheaves of wheat. Feel the stability. Vibrate, “On my left hand, Uriel.”

Move your feet to shoulder width apart and visualize another electric blue pentagram outlining your body. Vibrate, “For about me flames the pentagram.” Visualize a brilliant golden hexagram at your heart area. Vibrate, “And in the column shines the six-rayed star.”

Repeat the Qabalistic Cross to close the ritual.

  1. Peter says:

I have the following misgiving about doing the LBRP regularly. In this ritual we are banishing the Earth Element. Logically if we are banishing it then we are weakening it as compared to the other 3 elements. So in fact we are creating an elemental disabalance which if we do often could be cumulative and have very negative consequences.

This would b considered a very bad idea indeed in the Chinese/Taoist system where balance of the elements is considered paramount for health and stability.

I’d welcome comments on this. Is there something I’m not understanding?

    • Sheta Kaey says:

Yeah — the Earth element intrinsically contains all the other three elements within it, in western magick. Witness the four colors of Malkuth. It’s not like the Earth element of paganism, where you’re basically talking “dirt,” but instead refers to “matter,” which contains all four elements. To banish Earth is to banish all four.
