This movie will revolutionize the method[s] of viewing and creating. It will be the forerunner of a series of 3-D movies and, probably, hastened the introduction of 3-D TV to the markets. In addition, the movie itself was phenomenal and we can be assured that there will be sequels in the future....can't we ??

Oh - and those interested in the Tribe of the Strange concept might take a look at this piece I wrote for weaponizer.co.uk, which serves as their origin myth:

Great piece Gray - and thanks for the hat tip! I'm curious to see what you make of my thoughts on Avatar this issue...

A major difference I'd note between Avatar and Dune is where their mysticism derives from. Avatar's Eywa-worship is very much a Western New Age-derived position - bit of this, smidgin of that, wrapped up in a glowy ball - whereas Fremen mythology draws from a specifically Muslim Sufi current. It's also worth noting that there's actually more explicitly Sufi notes in Lynch's film of Dune than the original text - the speech Paul gives on the Weirding Way sonic weaponry;
"Some thoughts have a certain sound, that being the equivalent to a form. Through sound and motion, you will be able to paralyze nerves, shatter bones, set fires, suffocate an enemy or burst his organs. We will kill until no Harkonnen breathes Arakeen air. "
...that first line is a word-for-word quote from a piece by the quintessential Sufi master Rumi. Though I don't think he used it to burst organs.

I think the interesting place for anyone mystically-inclined is on the margins, the interface between such dualistic impulses as tribalism and universalism - the Shen which intercedes between Yin and Yang. I think the Tribe of the Strange are those who have a foot between two worlds, whatever those worlds may be, and are driven to find synthesis, or at least a continuing dynamic balance, between them.

Thank you for your thoughts, Sarenth. I believe part of the trick here is reaching a genuine synthesis between the universal impulse and its tribal counterpart, as opposed to an uneasy balance between competing interests. Without meaning to turn all geeky on you, Gene Roddenberry famously observed that utopia would consist of "infinite diversity in infinite combinations". I rather appreciate the sentiment, and look foward to many more conversations here and elsewhere with those magical souls who dare to claim kinship with the Strange. Blessed Be!

A very, very good article that has caused me to think a lot on how I relate to thinks. I think your summation is fairly spot on: I am part of the Tribe of the Strange. One needs only to look at my articles here on Rending the Veil, or to my Livejournal, to see that while I work within certain universal ways, my path is my own. We're all traversing the Tree by different branches, and not all of us are climbing it the same way, or climbing at all. Here's to difference, and unity within them.
