- How do I register for an account?
Register for an account here.
- What happened to the magazine?
The magazine is still coming out eight times a year, just as it was. But the index page has moved to here. Update your bookmarks! You can also click the link on the home page above the current news, and this will take you to the current issue.
- Does it cost anything to sign up?
Signing up for an account is free. At a later time, we intend to add paid account tiers, but basic accounts will always be free.
- What comes with a basic account?
With a basic account, you get to comment on articles, you get a personal blog and profile page, user icons, and the privilege to create community blogs or forums. Later, you will receive other perks that we haven’t implemented yet.
- How do I upload an picture so that it’s visible in the sidebar?
The sidebar pictures are user icons. They are not related to your profile picture, which is a larger picture (up to 250 x 250 pixels). To upload user icons, go to your Profile page and click “User icons” on the link bar below the main header image. You can upload up to 10 (20, soon) icons, from which you may select one as your site-wide default. You may also select any of these icons when you post an entry to your blog.
- How do I upload a picture so that it’s visible on my profile?
To upload a profile picture, go to your Profile page and click “Edit Profile” on the link bar below the main header image. On the first tab of the edit area, there is a link to upload a profile picture. These pictures must be 250 x 250 or smaller. The only time these pictures are seen is if someone visits your Profile.
- What are the size limits for pictures and icons?
For now, there are not file size limits though shortly we will be imposing a 40 kb limit on icons. Size limits are 100 x 100 for icons, and 250 x 250 for profile pictures.
- How many icons can I have?
At this time, you can have 10, but we are in the process of updating that number to 20.
- How do I add someone to my friends list?
Visit their Profile page, and in the link bar beneath the main header graphic you will see a link to “Add this user to my Friend’s list.” You can also find this link in the left sidebar.
- Can I use HTML/CSS in my profile or blog posts?
Yes, but keep in mind that you must be sure to close all DIV tags or you may find you have broken your page. You may link to pictures hosted elsewhere, but if you want them centered you will need to use a <div align=“center”> code to center it. Old HTML won’t work. Be sure to then close the tag.
- How do I make a Friends Only blog post?
Currently, the only way to make a Friends Only post is to utilize Access Controls. Click the “Your Friends” link in the gray bar at the top of the page. On the Friends management page, you will find a link to “Access Control” in the link bar beneath the main header image. Access controls are the same as filters or custom friends groups on LiveJournal. Create a group called “Friends” and add your friends to this group. Be sure to update this as you add new friends. Any communities you add will be able to see these filtered posts as well (more on communities below). We are working on a way to add Friends to a special filter as they are added and removed from your Friends list, as well as a way to select the filters for new friends when adding the new friend.
- Why can’t I add communities to my friends list? How do the communities work?
Stay tuned as we work on this question.
- What are the extra boxes of information that some people have on their profiles, and how do I get some?
Those are widgets. See below for how to add some to your page.
- What’s a widget?
A widget is a selected bit of information that appears on your profile page within a border. You may have seen widgets in use on other sites, such as NetVibes. We offer a limited selection at this time and hope to expand them at a future date. See below for how to add widgets.
- How do I add a widget?
You can add a widget by going to your Profile page and clicking “Add widget” in the link bar beneath the main header image. The file widget will be discontinued, but the others are available for your use. The thing to remember is that widgets are only half a page wide, at least until we figure all this out. If you want to add text from your extended profile, you might prefer to use the text widget.
- How many widgets can I have?
We currently offer a selection of six different widgets, each of which can be used multiple times. (How many? I have no idea. Try it, and let us know if you hit a limit!) The File widget is going to be discontinued. We also have Blog widgets, Profile widgets, Video widgets, Friend widgets, Text widgets, and Feed widgets. They are not displaying correctly at all times, yet – they tend to squish the content, and if it is not squishable, they cut it off. So bear with us as we tweak that behavior and let us know if you run into any specific problems.
- How can I get more widgets than the ones on the widget page?
We’ll expand the selection when we’ve caught up with some of the more pressing problems! :)
- How do I view my Friends page?
Click “Your Blog” in the gray bar, and then click “Your friends’ blogs” in the link bar beneath the main header image.
- How do I view community posts?
Currently, the only two ways to view community posts are the “View all posts” link from the Your Blog page, or the individual community blog pages. Click the name of the community in the left sidebar (or on the Your Friends page), and then click the “Community Blog” link in the left sidebar. We are working on easing navigation for these areas.
- How do I retrieve my password?
Go here.
- Will you do an article on xyz?
Sure! You write it, send it to us, and we’ll take a look at it. If it’s well researched and well written, we’ll be happy to use it and add you to our contributors index. If you want to make a suggestion, feel free to contact admin.
- How do I advertise on this site?
Contact Sheta. She’d love to hear from you! Ad policies and rates can be found here.
- Will you trade links with my site?
We do not currently have a link exchange, nor do we foresee one. However, you can post a link to your site on your profile page, and if you feel you have something to contribute to our galleries or shop, you are welcome to post a link to your site in your gallery area as long as you do not undersell your gallery price on your main website.
- How do I volunteer to help out?
Your best bet is to contact Sheta directly with your ideas on what you’d like to do, because the Positions Available page may not be up to date, or you may have an idea that hasn’t occurred to us yet!
- How do I submit an article?
Send it to Submissions @ rendingtheveil.com. Submission guidelines are here.
- Do you accept previously unpublished writers or artists?
You bet! Bring it on! If it’s well researched, well written, and is in the realm of the occult, we’ll do our best to fit it in.
