Volume I
Issue 3
February Issue February
2007

Welcome to the third issue of Rending the Veil! We’ve got some great new stuff in store for you this month. New columnists Gerald del Campo and Lupa will have their first columns in this issue.

The January issue has joined the Yule issue in the archives, and all content is accessible from the Site Map. New features coming very soon include RSS feed for articles and the author/member profiles, including personal messaging. A little further down the line, we’ll be implementing the blog function.

Still in the works is the upcoming Art Gallery, featuring magical art, photography, and handmade projects. There will be a meta-gallery area with each artist having his or her own personal sub-gallery. So far we’ve got Gerald del Campo doing a mad search for his photos and negatives, and Taylor Ellwood is signed up to display watercolor paintings and perhaps more. We’ll be using the galleries as a means to sell prints of photos, artwork, and possibly even original works, so if you’re interested in buying original art or prints by your favorite author(s), you can look forward to that. If you’d like to get involved and showcase/sell your art, write to Submissions with your information.

We have new volunteer positions available for “behind the scenes” work at the magazine. Someday we hope to actually turn these into paid positions, but that remains to be seen. All volunteers will be credited for their work. These positions are permanent so please, only seriously interested parties need apply. See the Positions Available page for details.

Features

Food Totems
by Lupa

“In recent months I’ve been working with some rather unorthodox totem animals in an attempt to break through the Big, Impressive North American Birds and Mammals (BINABM) stereotype of Neopagan totemism. BINABM refers to the tendency for most modern pagans who work with totems to stick with critters such as …” read more…

“ Just as Crowley said, the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram is not so one-sided as many people believe. If it were a “mere device” for banishing and invoking, as a majority of modern magicians so erroneously believe, it could be easily supplanted by any number of invoking and banishing rituals developed in other …” read more…

The Game of Tarots
Translated from the original French by Donald Tyson

A rare treat and hard-to-find essay, The Game of Tarots is a Tyson-translated gem orignally penned by Antoine Court de Gébelin. Though he’s denied its use by competitors, Mr. Tyson honored Rending the Veil by granting us permission to host and archive this very long, very intriguing article. Over 17,000 words, and a must-read for anyone with an interest in tarot. Read The Game of Tarots

Personal Thoughts on the Ethical Implications of Thelema
A series by Gerald del Campo, with:

What is an Ethical Person?

“Is a person that does the right thing due to fear of religious, judicial, or legislative repercussions ethical? What about people whose behavior is based on fear of losing societal standing? Can ethics be a part of a person’s genetic makeup? Does a person will ethics …” read more…

“This leg of the Witches’ Pyramid is probably the simplest on the surface, since it involves doing the process that you’ve already decided upon. The decision to do the spell has been made; the caster’s Will is honed and ready to …” read more…

“I intend to describe in this article a fundamental technique of Hermetic Theurgy that I have developed over the last 20 years, and with any luck the reader will find in my words something of value for themselves. It’s probably best to describe it as “active imagination” as …” read more…

“In Space/Time Magic, in my chapter in divination, I argued against using divination in magical practice every time a magician decided to do a ritual, because divination only reveals a few possibilities, while potentially limiting …” read more…

“One of the aspects of the occult writing industry that often puzzles me is the lack of internal citations. There’s usually a bibliography in the back of each book, but in the actual text there are rarely any internal citations, which show how the author has drawn…” read more…

Veiled Issues

Something new this month that we hope to see continue is the Veiled Issues Debate Corner, where we will showcase two opposing views of a controversial issue. This month, the topic is “bunnyhunting.” In the spirit of debate, editorials are left largely as is, and if you need citations, ask for them in comments. You may find an editor’s note or two. We hope you enjoy reading the perspectives and will leave comments for the authors!

“Okay, first things first. We like Daven quite a bit. He’s a cool person, and really knows his stuff when it comes to magic and paganism (as his many writings and correspondences attest). We just happen to be diametrically opposed to …” read more…

“Over the past several weeks there has been a lot of talk online about Bunny Hunting. That’s good, talk needs to happen and debate needs to happen. But it’s when talk stops that things go bad. And in this case, talk stopped and …” read more…

“ A friend of mine once asked me what I would do (magically speaking) if, suddenly, I had little or no leisure time left. He gave the extreme example of being stuck out in the bush and having to do my utmost to merely survive, not knowing whether …” read more…

“In his article on active imagination in the current issue of Rending the Veil, Frater Auxilior Arti describes something I found very familiar, so I elected to write a companion piece to his essay describing how I use it in my magical work …” read more…

Lupa's Den
by Lupa

“In Animal Wisdom, Bobcat and Lynx are listed as having many of the same qualities. Yet they are two distinct species, with different ranges of habitat and varying genetics and habits. The same goes for Raven and Crow, who also end up stuck …” read more…

Gerald del Campo offers a monthly selection of ten words pertinent to magick users everywhere – some serious, some firmly tongue-in-cheek. Check out his first selection in this issue. Read the Dictionary…
