Below is all the news (from the front page of the site) that’s been archived since we stopped using “News in Magick” as its own column. Anything that was published in the News in Magick column will be found in the Site Map. Until the feature index is ready, you should check the back issue index.
New RTV Banner Exchange can be found here. Join at will, and excuse any lingering dust.
Rending the Veil now has an RSS feed for the magazine. Add it to your favorite reader with this link: http://feeds.feedburner.com/rendingtheveil/
Scroll down to the bottom of the front home page to see our new, interactive submissions & issues calendar. The Submissions Calendar page has also been updated.
Rending the Veil occult webzine is putting out a general call for all writers interested in submitting pertinent, well-written material for our magazine. We are in need of regular contributors and contributors who only intend to submit when the mood strikes them. Anyone exhibiting a consistently readable style and reliable interest will be offered a regular column after a few submissions. If you ’ve never published (or even “e-published”), that’s not a problem… just send your submission to our forgiving Senior Editor (me) for a look and if it’s not up to par, I ’ll make suggestions to help you get it there. Only the most willfully ignorant and illiterate are beyond help. Oh, and maybe the really, really full-of-yourself jerks who know everything, but they ’re busy hanging out on alt.magick anyway.
Also, we are in serious need of content editors, copy editors, and, above all, coders with a knowledge of CSS. PHP is preferred but we can play with templates and get by. What is required is the ability to follow instructions for maintaining a consistent editing style across the ’zine, reliability, and the oh-so-precious abilities to take gentle criticism and meet deadlines. If this is you, please type an email as fast as your darling little fingers can fly and send it to sheta@rendingtheveil.com, and I will rain work like manna upon your eager, upturned brow. Or something. And you ’ll even get your name in print, if not exactly lights.
Waste no time. Go forth and spread this message, and do your part to see to it that we’re drowning in submissions and people looking for a coveted, unpaid but appreciated, position with the ’net’s premier magical webzine. (Well, we hope. Eventually.) They, or you, can rub shoulders with famous writers and stuff. They, or you, could be the next big thing. Who can say?
Rending the Veil has a new submission and release calendar taking effect as of 1 January. The issues of the magazine – as always, our primary focus – will now be spaced more evenly throughout the year, and will be released at least a couple of weeks in advance of whatever pagan holiday is upcoming. For example, our first issue of Volume Two will be Imbolc, and it goes live on 11 January 2008, three weeks before the actual holiday. Deadline for new contributor submissions is 29 December (not much notice, sorry) and deadline for contributors who’ve published with us before is 4 January.
For the Ostara issue, the deadline for new contributors is 8 February, and final deadline is seven days later, on 15 February. Unlike Volume One’s submission calendar, this calendar will remain the same each year, as the advance publication and evenly-spaced issues allow us to maintain one schedule rather than adjusting with the seasonal quarters. Edited to add: However, at some point we will be shifting the submission deadlines to one issue ahead – e.g. submit by the Imbolc deadline to be published in the Ostara issue – and the submissions page will reflect this when that change occurs.
We are also seeking layout editors – people to help Sheta code the actual css for the individual article pages. She’s got a template system working pretty well, but the process is still time-consuming. If you are interested in a long-term, part-time position volunteering to help out with this or with general editing chores, write to Sheta at sheta@rendingtheveil.com. One day, maybe we’ll even be able to pay people.
If you haven’t signed up for your Rending the Veil blog yet, you’re missing your chance to be one of our premiere members. Premier Membership may later pay off in account perks that others will have to pay for; it depends on the levels of enthusiasm that our earliest bloggers demonstrate in the usage of their accounts.
If you’ve already signed up for a regular Rending the Veil account, you should check the email address you signed up with for information on how to activate your blog. It’s already waiting for you to get started! If you have lost your log in information, just drop us a line and we’ll set you up with a new password or reminder of your user name. If you have not yet signed up for an account, this is the way to new blogging freedom of a caliber never before seen by occultists and weirdos of every variety. There will not be any buckling under to pressure imposed by Fundamentalist or right-wing groups on this site, ever! I, Sheta, give you my word that I will not be pushed around by any group with an agenda, and I will not be bribed by any advertiser’s dollars (or coerced by the lack of those dollars). I grew up on the fringes of subcultures and I had my fill (and then some) of being pushed around by holier-than-thou zealots who claimed they wanted to save my soul. It will not happen here as long as I am running this show, and I promise to do my best to never sell out to anyone with corporate suck-up ideas of how to run a business. I pledge to do my very best to keep this site run for occultists and by occultists, and with quality resources for occultists as our aim.
Fanfiction and fan art of any variety are welcome here, as long as you are not violating anyone’s explicit copyright. If anyone violates, we’ll simply ask you to remove anything a copyright holder complains about, and that’s all, unless you abuse us deliberately by repeatedly proving yourself an asshole who is unwilling to cooperate. Finally, explicit material is welcome if it’s filtered and your profile states that your blog contains mature subject matter. That’s all. Go for it!
Write to us at the above address with any suggestions or problem relating to the blogs, the new layout, or anything else. We’re still looking into how to set time zones, times for posts, and use the additional user icons we’re all able to upload (fixed!). We will also be adding Thelemic dates as an option, and later, additional astrological settings for those who desire them. Perks for future paid accounts are being discussed now. Get your suggestions in early!
