Terms of Service
Last revision 2 January 2009

Rending the Veil (“the Service” or “the site,”) web site, forums, resources, and community tools featured herein are brought to you by Sheta Kaey for Rending the Veil. This web site is intended as a business (sole proprietorship) and a service to the occult community. The following additional Terms of Service will apply to your use of the Service, site, and any resources offered herein. Your continued use of the Service constitutes your binding acceptance of the Terms of Service, Rending the Veil’s Privacy Policy, and any modifications made thereto.

General Rules

  1. Etiquette — Be courteous. While flame wars happen everywhere, no matter how much we try to avoid them, you need to realize that if things get out of hand we will take steps to shut it down. We will moderate people as necessary, and we will place restrictions on anyone who develops a pattern of abusive behavior.
  2. Offensive material — Users may not transmit or encourage others to transmit material or links to material considered patently offensive in nature. This includes, but is not limited to using race, religion, sexual orientation, culture, ethnicity, disability, nationality, belief system, or preferred gender as a means of insult; using threatening, harassing, defamatory, hate speech, or libelous language; and posting, requesting, linking to, or otherwise sharing material considered pornographic, obscene, graphic, or hate speech.
    1. Libel & Hate Speech — You must refrain from libel and hate speech of any kind, including racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual orientation, or paradigm bashing. Anyone showing serious propensity toward abusive hate-based behavior risks banning and notification to their internet service provider. Using terms for homosexuality or mental or physical disability as a means of insult in any way is considered offensive. This includes, but is not limited to, calling things “gay” or “retarded” as a synonym for “stupid,” or using offensive slang terms or slurs. The use of any such derogatory language will result in an automatic suspension.
    2. Profanity — Reasonable use of profanity is fine, unless it is used as a personal attack. We don’t care how casually you express yourself, but use common sense. If you’re warned, take the warning seriously. You may not get another chance.
    3. Trolling- Messages intended solely to annoy and/or offend other users by going against the clear nature of a board, topic or chat room are not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to: provoking other users to respond with flames; provoking fans of a particular system or game, especially on boards or topics dedicated to that system or game; making misleading topic titles; asking obviously useless questions; posting false information as fact; and using another user’s quote in your signature without permission.

    4. Off-Topic Posts The main purpose of the message boards is to provide discussion forums and opportunities for magicians, witches, occultists, pagans, et al, to socialize and get to know each other and various practices. Topicality is expected and will be enforced on all message boards not noted as purely social in nature.
    5. Disruptive Behavior — Behavior that disrupts the Service for other users, deliberately or not, is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to
      1. Messages or topic titles that force browsers to scroll horizontally
      2. Blank, content-free, or single word messages, including quoting another user without adding any additional content, responding only with “LOL!”, and posts that consist only of emoticons
      3. Posting two or more identical or near-identical messages or topics
      4. Posting deliberately hard to read titles or posts (e.g. ALL CAPS; AlTeRnAtE cApS; no spaces; no punctuation; two or more consecutive periods, question marks or exclamation points; leetspeak or excessive chat speak)
      5. Post counts (e.g. “First comment!” etc.)
      6. Posting nonsensical messages
      7. Posting large ASCII art (except in social topics specifically calling for it)
      8. Common sense clause: Use a spell check, and don’t be an idiot unless you’re prepared to get called on it.
      9. Additional Notes on the Disruptive Rule —

      10. Malware — Extra-harsh penalties will be applied for posting any link that infects another computer with malware, trojans, viruses, or anything that disrupts the individual’s control over their computer.
      11. Plot Spoilers — Posting “spoilers” (critical plot details) about movies, time-delayed broadcast events, games, or other media in the title of a topic or in a message without a clear notice is prohibited. When posting spoilers, the title should warn the reader, e.g. “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (SPOILERS!).” Do not post spoilers in response to another post. Start a new post with the information as above, to allow others a way to avoid reading spoilers accidentally.
      12. Flooding, Invading, and Board Wars — Flooding a board with disruptive topics or comments or invading another board as a group with intent to flood it is prohibited. Announcing or inciting a “war” or any conflict with the regular members of another board is prohibited. Ridicule, et al, of people on another board is prohibited (see “pagadigm bashing”). Posting a link to a third-party site in a way that invited members of that site to invade a board for purposes of disruptive behavior is grounds for banning.
      13. Impersonation — Impersonating other users by creating and/or using a user account with a name clearly intended to impersonate, mock, or antagonize another user, or otherwise falsely claiming to be another member is strictly prohibited. (For example, one member of a board long ago and far away used the name “CloneMirror” to mock user “StoneMirror.” Don’t do it.)
      14. Harassment, Stalking, and Privacy — Continual harassing behavior directed towards a particular individual or group with the intent of creating an offensive, intimidating, or otherwise hostile environment, with or without explicit or implicit threats, is strictly prohibited. Posting contact or other private information of any other person (Rending the Veil user or not) is also prohibited and is grounds for banning.
      15. Spam — Spammers will be banned immediately. Anyone posting off-topic spam will be banned without warning. Anyone posting only links repeatedly or with no discussion content will be warned and then, if the problem persists, will be banned. We reserve the right to contact your ISP regarding any inappropriate activities by you on the site. Users are permitted to link to their personally maintained websites, shops, or forums in their forum signature, and to provide one link per site per month in reply to a relevant query only.
        Exceptions are listed below.

        1. These Links are Not Okay —
          1. Commercial or personal web site advertisements for items or sites that do not focus on occult topics
          2. Repeatedly linking to the same site or page for purposes of personal gain
          3. Linking, for personal gain, to any site you do not maintain yourself
          4. Make Money Online (MMO) sites, including Search Engine Optimization (SEO) links
          5. Chain letters and pyramid schemes
          6. Any referrer-ID based sites
          7. Any psychic services sites (Keen, Kasamba et al)
        2. These Links are Okay in signatures or in response to a relevant query, in tandem with relevant content
          1. Personal, non-commercial website addresses
          2. Requests for comments on personal sites or social networking sites
          3. Interesting or relevant link to another site or sites that are not for personal gain
          4. Personally maintained, off site page(s) that lists links to their other services
          5. Links to one’s personally maintained shop or Etsy page
          6. Links to one’s relevant eBay auctions.
      16. Illegal Activity — Communications that violate or incite others to violate the law are not permitted. This includes, but is not limited to, asking for or providing illegal copies of copyrighted software; methods of circumventing copyright protection; illegal copies of copyrighted music, movies, videos, or any other type of media; reprints of material from web sites or text sources; or any sort of plagiarism.
      17. Content — We reserve the right to remove, at any time and without notice, any content from the Service. We are not required to explain ourselves to your satisfaction, though we’ll do our best to provide a reason for the removal, if possible. There may be times when we cannot divulge our reasons.
      18. Age restrictions — You must be at least 13 years old to register for the Service. We do not knowingly collect any information from any users under 13 years of age, and if we discover that an underage user has fraudulently registered, their account will immediately be terminated.
      19. Termination of account — We reserve the right to immediately terminate or suspend anyone who fails to abide by these rules or the Rending the Veil Terms of Service. The decision to suspend or terminate accounts will be made at the sole discretion of the site administrators.
        1. Appeals — Members will be given a reasonable opportunity to appeal via private, off-site communication with administrators. Once the appeal process is over, our decision is final. At that point, all bans will be permanent and irrevocable, until some future time when the offender can demonstrate compelling evidence that he or she should be readmitted.
      20. Registration — In order to post messages on the forums (other than the help boards), view restricted forums, and use other advanced services, you must register using a valid e-mail address and follow all required registration confirmation procedures. No posting privileges will be granted until the account is fully activated.
      21. Sole access — Your membership to this site and its forums is intended for your personal and individual use only. You may not share, transfer, sub-let, license, abdicate, gift, or otherwise extend your membership and its privileges to anyone other than yourself.
      22. Password protection — Users are solely responsible for protecting their accounts from unauthorized access. You are strongly encouraged to select a hard to guess password and to not use that password on any other site. Accessing or attempting to access any user account not belonging to you without permission is prohibited. Accessing another user’s account is grounds for a permanent ban from the site.
      23. Multiple Accounts — While it is acceptable for users to maintain multiple accounts, we can and do track all accounts used on the same computer(s) and consider them one account for the purpose of monitoring violations of the Terms of Service. If these Additional Terms of Use are violated severely enough to warrant the termination of one account, all known accounts held by that user and/or all accounts using the same computer(s) may also be banned at the administrators’ discretion.
      24. Violations and Penalties — Topics and messages that violate the Terms of Service will be deleted from the boards and additional penalties may be applied at the administrators’ discretion. Re-posting deleted violations is also considered a violation.
        1. Administrative Action — Messages and topics may be removed at any time and for any reason at the sole discretion of administrators and their designated moderators. User accounts may be warned, suspended, or revoked at any time and for any reason at the sole discretion of administrators. All determinations of what is “acceptable” and “unacceptable” content will be determined solely by administrators and moderators.
        2. Harassment — Intentional, repeated, or severe violations are cause for the termination of your account, banishment from all use of the boards of your IP address or even your entire ISP. In such event, we also reserve the right to contact your ISP concerning your activities.
      25. Contact & Your Privacy — We may contact you via e-mail or postal mail to provide you with information about the Service, your account, or to provide you with information about site-related special offers available only to Service subscribers. We will not share your information with any third parties unless under subpoena. You may contact us via email at admin@rendingtheveil.com or by postal mail at: Rending the Veil, 260A Oakland Avenue, Baytown, Texas, 77510-1139, USA

We do not warrant that the Service or the Software will be uninterrupted, error free or free of viruses or other harmful components. No oral or written information or advice given by us or any of our authorized representatives shall create a warranty or in any way increase the scope of this warranty. The above exclusions will not apply in any jurisdiction that does not allow the exclusion of implied warranties.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, NEGLIGENCE, SHALL RENDING THE VEIL OR ANY PARTNER OF RENDING THE VEIL THAT MAY BE INVOLVED IN THE DISTRIBUTION OR PROVISION OF THE SOFTWARE OR THE SERVICE, OR ANY OF THEIR RESPECTIVE OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, DIRECTORS, AGENTS, LICENSEES, SUBLICENSES OR ASSIGNS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES THAT RESULT FROM THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE SERVICE, THE SOFTWARE OR RELATED DOCUMENTATION, EVEN IF SUCH PARTIES HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF THOSE DAMAGES. THE ABOVE EXCLUSIONS WILL NOT APPLY IN ANY JURISDICTION THAT DOES NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES. IN NO EVENT SHALL OUR TOTAL LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL DAMAGES, LOSSES, AND CAUSES OF ACTION (WHETHER IN CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE) EXCEED THE AMOUNT PAID BY YOU FOR THE SOFTWARE OR SERVICE FOR THE TIME PERIOD AFFECTED.
